ÉCU WELCOMES 2026 WITH FRESH EYES AND FRESH MINDS!

Written by Jènna Kharroubi and Chiara De Liberti

Happy new year! Did you miss us? Don’t worry, we have a lot of news ready to be shared with you.

Last month took place the sixth edition of the All Asian Independent Film Festival at the Legend Cinema Olympia on December 12th – 13th – 14th. Those three days, we celebrated the voices and visions of independent filmmakers from all over the biggest continent. This was an amazing opportunity to meet all of you talented filmmakers out there, just waiting to be put under the spotlight. Shining the light on your fantastic films has been an honour, and we can not wait to hear more about them and your new projects, so don’t forget about us!

With the All Asia Independent Film Festival now coming to an end, the ÉCU team finds itself with one foot in and one foot out between the screening planning of the AAIFF Asia winners and the opening of new perspectives in order to shift its focus (but not totally) onto 2026. Now having time to refresh, more than ever we seek inspiration from all of your independent movies, we really can’t get enough!

Indeed, even after wrapping up the All Asian Independent Film Festival in Cambodia, we are still working on perfecting the finishing touches. For the past few weeks, our Event Department has been preparing an ÉCU-On-The-Road exclusive screening in Paris between February and March of the films that won AAIFF 2025. This event will be a small gathering where the ÉCU Team will work with Asian organisations and institutions in Paris to promote independent films from their countries to local audiences. We are now looking for a venue to host this event, reaching out to multiple organisations like Centre Culturel de Chine, Maison du Cambodge, Centre Culturel de Taïwan and many others.

Talking about winners! We were thrilled to meet all of you creative minds at the Legend Cinema Olympia in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We loved hearing directly from you and learning more about your creative process in such a festive environment. Hence why we hosted on Friday, january 16, 2026 another episode of our ÉCU Friday Live dedicated to an open discussion with the winners of the AAIFF Asia 2025, which you can find on our Spotify page here. A podcast meticulously orchestrated by our festival director Scott Hillier and journalist department, who has been following up closely from our office in Paris the events of the festival. For obvious reasons our whole team couldn’t attend the festival in Cambodia, and if you couldn’t either, you can find three scrupulously written articles on our website recounting the three days of the festival.

Find out more about the AAIFF Asia 2025 winners here!

Back in December the graphic design department was involved in managing the realization of posters and VIP passes to promote the AAIFF in the most aesthetic and captivating way; attention to every detail is the team’s priority. But now that the air has changed, new goals are on sight ! The team is joyfully projected into the visual representation of the long-awaited ÉCU Film Festival which will be held in April 2026. The department was uncertain about how to best represent the festival at its truest identity. After Christmas break they were working on embodying the notion of reality in movies, considering the rising relevance of AI and how to incorporate it in the new poster. As weeks passed by, they came up with a more authentic version of what the new year looks for ÉCU, diving into the subtleties of AI getting more and more involved in the filmmaking industry. It is definitely still a work in progress, but so far our team has been leaning more into a grungy adaptation of indie, emphasizing through typography and strong and dark colors, a powerful, rebellious and young expressive form.

The tone of 2026 so far for our team is punctilious, strategized and detail oriented. As we step slowly away from the AAIFF Asia 2025, our focus shifts to the ÉCU Film Festival. More coffee cups have been added to our office table as we welcome our long awaited new interns. As they join us right after the thrill and intensity of the AAIFF 2025, our team has had the time to help them accommodate and settle in nicely, discover more about the festival and the work they will be doing during their stay with us.

As our graphic design department looks into the evolution of the use of AI in the cinema industry, so does our freshly new journalist intern Chiara De Liberti, who just flew to Paris and is already planning to write an article, by now she is putting an eye on some research on the progressive growth of AI in the cinema industry; a rather unusual development that needs to be discussed. Curious now aren’t you? If you want to know what our new journalist has to say on this, don’t forget to check our blog for this upcoming release on the ÉCU website here!

Other than our blog, you can keep up with us throughout all type of platforms: make sure to check out our Instagram, Spotify, X, TikTok, Facebook and Youtube pages, carefully curated by our social media department team. The team is shrinking a little bit as we had to say our goodbyes to our beloved intern Maria Leonaki, but worry not! Posts and updates will still go out, and they laboriously scheduled this month’s content so no time to get bored! You can expect a nostalgic carousel post as a rewind of the AAIFF Asia 2025 weekend and some new tiktoks about our everyday life in our little parisian office coming soon.

Our filmmaking department has been working non-stop since the festival! They’ve been wrapping up the AAIFF Asia 2025 content and working assiduously on the ÉCU Friday Live Podcast Winners recording which is now uploaded on Spotify. The next step is to spread and promote not only the films but also the directors displayed at the festival by editing interviews of the last participants and gathering together exhaustive and emotional footage to create new content ready to be shared.

And of course, the team never forgets its audience! Indeed, during the Christmas holidays, the main interest was to connect with all of our followers by sharing a holiday campaign advising to slow down, take a minute to breath and take the holidays as an opportunity to relax before moving onto the new rhythm of 2026, which you can find on our Instagram page here.

Book Film Club:

One of our favorite things to do here in the Paris office, is to share recommendations from our Letterboxd — especially underappreciated films (in our opinion). Here are a few of the office’s top picks of the month, in line with the «back to 2016» online trend, we thought to catch up on some independent films that are worth being rediscovered.

20th Century women (2016) by Mike Mills

Winner of the AARP Annual Movies for Grownups awards in 2017, this film follows the story of a teenager, his mother, and two other women who help him grow up amid lessons about love, feminism and freedom in 1979, Southern California. A cinematography that shines with its pastel colors accompanied by the Talking Heads and Siouxsie and the Banshees in the soundtrack.

Captain fantastic (2016) by Matt Ross

A cult classic of adventure-on the road movies ! This is a moving story about two parents that raise their six children in the wilderness as they are disillusioned with the American capitalistic way of living. But a tragedy and other unexpected events will lead the father, Ben, to reconsider his idea of parenting.

Aux armes, Christopher (2025) by Elise Amblard

Given the excitement for the upcoming ÉCU Film festival in April, we thought to do a throwback to one of the last winners of the last edition, certainly the cruelest one. Aux armes, Christopher is the story about an identitarian 17 year old boy who lives in a quiet suburban house in France with his father and his sweet little sister. The impending spectacle of a solar eclipse and the arrival of a muslim family as neighbors will break the silence in an engaging climax. The director Elise really did an amazing work in interpreting the loss of innocence through sharp shots of tense atmospheres, leaving it to the background music to speak for the most part. We hope you’ll like it, go check it out on Canal+ !

Hamnet (2026) by Chloé Zhao

The new year comes with new releases ! At the start of January the most anticipated films are numerous: from blockbuster to light comedies, thriller to heartbreaking dramas. Our team had the privilege to have an early look at the movie Hamnet, based on the fictional novel by Maggie O’Farrell, co-writer of the screenplay, whose attempt was to give a presence and shine light on the death of the only male child of Shakespeare that inspired the world’s best known tragedy: Hamlet. The story is portrayed in a poetic and symbolic manner, at times mythical. The viewer is faced with a theatrical writing whose intent is on giving emotions through spectral and magical traits, of an ancient magic linked to the earth, what gives and what takes away, its healing herbs and its dangers, clear or bad air, life and death. Further, many of the strategies used by Shakespeare in his plays are evident in the film, such as disguise and mistaken identity, the collision between theatre and reality and creating quiproquos. For the first time we can take a deeper look at the dissociation of a man who sacrificed his life and family to become an immortal artist, leaving all of us with one vision: art as consolation, remedy for grief and most of all, union.

Trickster (2025)

One last recommendation to honour the end of the All Asian Independent Film Festival 2025 is the film Trickster, winner of the Best Actor 2025 award. A story that delves into the often complex and emotional conflicts within families through the point of view of a struggling 21 years old woman taking care of her dementia-stricken father, focusing on the relationships with those closest to us. At its core, “Trickster” is a story about learning to let go, embracing the imperfections in those we love, and finding common ground, even when it feels out of reach. The film is now available on Youtube, make sure to go check it out here!

Breaking Family Cycles in Cinema: Violence and Love in The Offspring and One Last Supper

“Violence begets violence, and the blood of one generation calls for the blood of the next.” That is the warning at the heart of Greek mythology’s House of Atreus. After Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to win favor from the gods in the Trojan war, his wife Clytemnestra killed him in retribution. Their descendants carried on that cycle of vengeance for generations, until their son, Orestes, faced his guilt and broke the bloodline’s curse. That same age-old theme of intergenerational resentment and violence runs through Sung Thy’s The Offspring, part of the AAIFF Asia 2025 official selection.

Colour Palettes in Independent Cinema

One thing I have noticed in independent movies is that their directors take their colour palette really seriously. It’s a commitment, because they want to convey the message of their project in every way possible. Naturally, this includes colour themes, since colour theory is one of the easiest tools to learn and use in the production of a movie.
