PARIS — The vibrant space of Matchai & Coffee set the scene this week for the ÉCU 2026 Lunch Party, where filmmakers, festival insiders, and cinema lovers gathered to celebrate independent film in an atmosphere of warmth and creative exchange.

The afternoon unfolded through casual encounters, lively conversations, music, and drinks shared among guests, creating an intimate yet dynamic environment that reflected the very spirit of the festival. More than just a social gathering, the event marked a key moment in the ÉCU calendar: the official unveiling of the 2026 ÉCU Official Selection and the official poster, ahead of the festival taking place on April 24,25,26 in Paris.

At the heart of the event, festival founder and president Scott Hillier took the floor to present this year’s edition. In his speech, he emphasized the global identity of ÉCU, a festival that continues to connect filmmakers across four continents—Europe, Asia, Africa, and America—while remaining deeply committed to supporting independent voices, highlighting the festival’s ongoing mission to champion creativity and diversity in cinema.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presence of four special guest directors, who offered exclusive previews of their films and shared their excitement about being part of ÉCU 2026. Among them, Julie Fackler introduced Arundel’s Lighthouse, giving insight into the inspiration behind her work. Hanane Sarin spoke about Prescription, while Quentin Kwiatkowski presented Sunyata, reflecting on its philosophical undertones. Béla Baptiste also shared his enthusiasm for The Obelisk, offering audiences a glimpse into his cinematic vision.

Their presence brought a sense of immediacy and anticipation to the event, reinforcing the connection between filmmakers and audiences that lies at the core of ÉCU.

As the afternoon transitioned into early evening, the relaxed yet inspiring atmosphere at Matchai & Coffee captured the essence of what the festival represents: a meeting point for cultures, ideas, and stories. The Lunch Party not only celebrated the announcement of the Official Selection but also reaffirmed ÉCU’s role as a global center for independent cinema.

With the 2026 edition just weeks away, the energy felt throughout the event signals another promising year for ÉCU—one where new voices, bold visions, and meaningful connections will once again take center stage in Paris.
