ÉCU Welcomes the Summer! A Month of Festivals, Music & Pride Celebrations

Written by Pia Stoffers

Have you noticed how quickly time flies? The ÉCU Film Festival was already two months ago, and yet that one weekend, filled with unforgettable moments, still feels very much alive.

Back in April in Paris, the selected winning films showed us just how much potential lies within the independent cinema scene. From intimate narratives to visually striking experiments: this year’s ÉCU lineup once again proved that independent films are more vibrant and bold than ever before. Each film brings something unique to the table: they move us, inspire us, and leave a lasting impression. In particular, the winning films stood out for the relevance of their themes, the precision of their direction, and the compelling performances of the cast.

Curious? Don’t miss the festival winners—you can explore them here

Summer didn’t take long to arrive this year: by the end of May, a heatwave had already set in, bringing new energy, sunshine, and soaring temperatures. That’s exactly how we’re kicking off June—full of motivation, positivity, and anticipation for everything still to come. Because one thing is certain: it’s going to be vibrant, colorful, and anything but boring.

Following the success of ÉCU 2026, the next chapter is already around the corner: the upcoming second edition of AAIFF Americas’, taking place from August 14th to 16th in Mexico City at Cinemanía. Preparations are in full swing, and we’re more than excited for an unforgettable festival in Mexico—especially as the extended deadline is finishing soon! But submissions are still open here until the 5th of June.

The All African Independent Film Festival (AAIFF Africa) in Rwanda is coming up pretty soon and will take place this fall from October 10th to 12th. For three days, we will celebrate the voices and visions of independent filmmakers from across the African continent. You can find more details here.

Overall, it’s worth taking a brief look back at what our creative minds have been passionately working on the past month, as well as what we still have to look forward to. As always, we’re keeping busy—but staying highly motivated.

ÉCU’s Video Production Department is currently focused on creating promotional videos aimed at reaching as wide an audience as possible while at the same time producing a countdown video for the extended submission deadline for the AAIFF Americas’. Alongside these projects, they are continuously developing new creative video ideas in preparation for both AAIFF Americas’, AAIFF Africa, and AAIFF Asia.

Our Social Media Team is still actively sharing highlights from ÉCU 2026, a festival edition enriched by great music, and engaging discussion panels such as #SheShoots, alongside interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, and Q&A sessions. Working closely with the Journalism Department, they also use our channels to showcase this year’s award-winning films and highlight what makes them stand out. At the same time, they are developing a series of cinema facts about the independent film scene that every film enthusiast should know—so stay tuned! Meanwhile, with the next festivals already on the horizon, ideas are flowing, minds are buzzing, and preparations are in full swing.

The Journalism Department produced a special episode of the ÉCU Friday Live Podcast in May, featuring this year’s winning filmmakers and screenwriters. In these conversations, they reflect on their work, their films, and their experiences at the festival, sharing what inspired their projects, what the award means to them, and what future projects they are currently developing. Looking ahead to June, we are planning a series of new podcast episodes exploring relevant topics that no independent cinema enthusiast should miss. These will be followed by special features dedicated to the Americas and Africa festivals. You can catch up on all episodes anytime on Spotify and YouTube. In addition, the Blog continues to expand with creative articles offering deeper insights into the world of film.

The Marketing Department is currently busy preparing for several important upcoming events this month—from Father’s Day to Fête de la Musique to Pride Day—and is already hard at work. The team is compiling a marketing and contact list to reach out to film and animation schools and encourage them to participate in the African Festival, which is set to launch in October this year.

Our Graphic Design team is developing the final version of a poster for the Americas and is already working on the one for Africa as well. These posters are especially important for all our departments, which is why it requires a great deal of creativity and attention to detail, as it’s all about playing with colors and words.

A platform where all films from past festivals can be viewed in a clear and organized way is exactly what our Channel Coordinators are currently working on with EuroIFC: they are still coordinating the website to ensure that all films from our festivals can be accessed in a structured and user-friendly format—so that no film gets missed. Thanks to their work, the films will soon be made publicly accessible in a clear and well-organized way!

Let’s move on to our Sponsorship Managers. They continue to strengthen relationships with partners, ensuring smooth coordination of awards and maintaining long-term collaborations.

Our Event Management team is also still actively involved in the aftermath of the festival in April. They are sending out awards to the winners and have begun the selection process for films submitted to AAIFF Americas’. There is also some exciting news: the date for the AAIFF Americas’ Launch Party is confirmed for July 4 in Paris—don’t miss this event. More details will follow over the course of the month.

In May, we unfortunately had to say goodbye to several creative, motivated, and above all dedicated interns who not only provided us with support over the past months and weeks, but also left a lasting impact on our team and made a valuable contribution through their hard work. However, the HR department has already brought in some fresh energy: In early June, we look forward to the support of Grace Ferro (Event Management), Dora Meszaros (HR), Kamila Giniiatova (Graphic Design), and Gloria Gato (Website Management).

With motivation, passion, and a lot of teamwork, we manage to organize unforgettable festivals for the independent film scene year after year. Every month, we look back on our work with pride and look forward to what the future brings!

You can keep up with us across all platforms: be sure to check out our Instagram, Spotify, X, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube pages, all carefully curated by our team.

See you very soon and stay tuned,

Book Film Club:

Things were buzzing again this month: our team had some intense discussions around the Letterboxd recommendations. Of course, reaching a quick consensus on the film selection was never on the table. But which films are in the spotlight this time? And which ones are absolute must-sees?

In the spirit of Pride Month, Fête de la Musique, and the beginning of summer, the ÉCU selection is deeply emotional, diverse, and, overall, absolutely worth watching—films that stand out and deserve your attention.

Curious? Here are our Top 3 🎬

AN EXCESS BAGGAGE (2025) – MYRIAM GARCIA MARIENSTRAS

Winner of the ÉCU 2026 Best Independent Director award, An Excess Baggage is a film by Myriam Garcia Marienstras that tells the story of a woman who loves too much and carries more than she can hold. At its core, it explores the relationship between a mother and her daughter, bound by an intense, almost wordless connection. There is no doubt that this film delves into themes of intimacy, emotional dependency, and fragile human relationships, focusing on moments of imbalance, silence, and vulnerability. A must-watch for us.

OBSESSION (2025) – CURRY BARKER

The ÉCU team can’t stop talking and thinking about this horror-psychological film—and that’s because it operates on a much smarter level than its premise initially suggests. Here’s what it’s about: After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, the hopeless romantic Bear finds himself getting exactly what he asked for—but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth seeing!

WITNESS (2024) – AIDA TEBIANIAN

Even though Witness won the Excellence in Women’s Filmmaking award at ÉCU 2025, this short film still stays with us. Aida Tebianan manages to take the audience on an emotional journey that sheds light on the realities of women’s lives, narrating a small yet powerful part of modern Iranian society and its limitations. Witness follows Sharmin, a young girl whose father has murdered her mother. She seeks to find witnesses who can testify in court according to Islamic law in order to save her father from execution. While trying to save his life, she finds herself trapped in a difficult moral dilemma between fear and conscience. A highly recommended watch from our side.

Last but not least: Here you’ll find the full selection for this year at ÉCU again & here for 2025.
